How to Get the Bedside Right

A bedside table rarely gets much thought, until the room is missing one. Then its absence becomes obvious: nowhere for a lamp, no place for a book, no small surface to hold the ordinary things a bedroom collects

Scale comes first. The top of the table should sit close to mattress height, or slightly below, so you can reach for it without looking. Too low and it disappears beside the bed. Too high and it can compete with the bed head. In a room with a generous bed head, a taller table can hold its own. In a smaller room, something slimmer and more understated helps keep the space feeling open.

Storage is a personal decision more than a design one. A single drawer suits anyone who prefers clear surfaces, keeping chargers, glasses and books out of sight. An open shelf suits the opposite instinct: things left in view, close at hand and part of how the room is actually used. Neither is more correct than the other.

Materiality is where a bedside table earns its place in the room, rather than simply filling the gap beside the bed. Timber in a similar tone to the bed head creates a cohesive, considered feel. A contrasting finish—pale oak beside a darker bed frame, or a stone top against timber—gives the eye somewhere to land and keeps the room from reading as one flat block of colour.

Pairs don't need to match exactly. Two identical tables on either side of the bed bring a settled, symmetrical calm. Two different pieces, chosen with a shared material or tone, suit a room that feels collected over time rather than bought all at once. Both approaches work well. What matters is that the choice feels intentional rather than accidental.

Once the table is in place, what sits on it does the rest of the work. A lamp for reading, something to hold water, and a stack of two or three books rather than five. A bedside table styled with restraint can say more about a room than one crowded with everything the day left behind.

It's a small piece of furniture, but it sits closest to where the day starts and ends. Worth choosing with a little more care than its size might suggest.
