Nestled in the heart of Redfern, Sydney, this renovation by Tilecloud is a testament to the power of warm, cozy aesthetics and expert interior design. Led by passionate renovators, the Tilecloud team has an eye for detail and brings together a captivating blend of textures, materials, and colours to transform this house into a warm and inviting home.

We’re thrilled to have been a part of this project, with key RJ Living pieces in the living room, dining room and kids' bedroom and recently had the opportunity to chat with Drew from Tilecloud to gain insights into the inspiration, design choices, and the role of natural materials in creating this cozy haven.

What was your inspiration for the warm and cozy colour palette of the home?

Drew: I had seen so many of my reference images for the project that made their way onto my mood board featuring similar colours that it became an obvious choice in the end.

I also think this palette is very in keeping with our interior designer, Kate Lawrence’s signature style, so the final decisions were less about ‘would it be warm and cozy’ and more like ‘which exact shade of warm and cozy would we pick’.

Why was the Loop Table the perfect option for the Dining Room?

Drew: I really love the rounded ends. The shape has a unique ability to not take up too much space in the room while still being able to seat 6 adults comfortably. Naturally, in a terrace house, space is at a premium, so clever hacks that trick the eye like rounded corners make a huge difference.

What made you choose the Seam sofa?

Drew: I personally loved the relaxed look it gives right from day 1. The edge detail on the cushions makes it look a lot more inviting than a modern, smooth sofa with a tightly stretched cover. Our family are also lovers of a ‘deep’ sofa seat, and the Seam sofa certainly delivers in that department too.

There are plenty of natural materials and Solid Oak across the spaces. What do you love about this material?

Drew: Real timber and specifically oak have the ability to elevate a space but still make it inviting and warm. One of our goals was to make sure the house didn't feel like a museum or art gallery of untouchable objects.

Using plenty of solid oak around the various rooms meant that it was immediately warm and inviting without feeling cheap.

What's your tip for working with a lot of neutral tones but having them complement each other?

Drew: For me, it's to seek professional help! I knew I wanted that warm, neutral palette, but I didn't know exactly how to pull it all together cohesively.

I relied heavily on Kate, the interior designer, to help with material and finish selections to make the spaces feel balanced and thoughtfully put together.

There were a few moments when we only had a few of the elements in the rooms where things felt a bit bland, but once we finished styling with all the pillows, throws, vases, sculptural objects, etc., it all came together.

It's also super easy to change the vibe of the house when the ‘highlight elements’ are the small finishing touches as opposed to the bigger, more permanent elements of the room like the timber floor colour or sofa colour, etc.

The Redfern Project by Tilecloud is a testament to the power natural materials and a warm, cozy colour palette in creating a truly inviting home. With its unique blend of aesthetics and functionality, this project serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to transform their living space into a sanctuary of comfort and style.
