Care & Maintenance
Proper care and maintenance of your rug will ensure its longevity and keep it looking beautiful for years to come. Follow these guidelines to protect your investment and maintain the quality of your rug.
Care instructions apply to rug products from RJ Living.
Care Guide
General Maintenance
General Maintenance
- Vacuum regularly using a low-suction setting and a flat suction head. Avoid using rotating vacuum heads or beater bars, as they can damage the pile.
- Rotate your rug every 3–6 months to ensure even wear and prevent fading from sunlight exposure.
- Use rug protectors under heavy furniture to prevent flattening the pile.
- Place a rug underlay to extend the life of your rug by preventing fibers from being crushed and providing additional support.
Cleaning & Spill Management
Cleaning & Spill Management
- Blot spills immediately with a dry cloth—never rub, as this can spread the stain.
- Use mild detergent with cold water for spot cleaning. Avoid harsh chemicals and scrubbing.
- For deep cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaner to prevent damage.
- Avoid certain cleaners, including dry powder cleaners, oxygen-based cleaners, alkaline cleaners, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide, as they can damage the rug fibers.
Shedding, Pilling & Loose Threads
Shedding, Pilling & Loose Threads
- Shedding is normal, especially for new wool rugs, and will reduce over time with regular vacuuming.
- Loose fibres or "pop-ups" can be trimmed with scissors or a de-pilling machine. Never pull loose threads, as this may cause damage.
- Pilling may occur due to foot traffic, furniture movement, or vacuuming. This can be trimmed if needed.
Fading & Sunlight Exposure
Fading & Sunlight Exposure
- Keep your rug away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, especially for dark-coloured rugs.
- Rotate your rug periodically to minimise uneven sun exposure and colour changes.
Storage & Handling
Storage & Handling
- Store rugs rolled up in a dry place when not in use.
- Creases from shipping will disappear over time. Reverse rolling your rug overnight can speed up this process.
- Any odour from packaging will dissipate within a few days when exposed to fresh air.
Handmade Rug Characteristics
Handmade Rug Characteristics
- Each rug is unique, with natural variations due to handwoven craftsmanship.
- Pop-ups (loose threads) are normal and should not be considered defects.
- Handmade rugs may have slight irregularities, such as imperfect edges, slight colour variations, and pile height differentiation.
- Rug colour may vary slightly from online pictures due to lighting, individual screen settings and variation between batches.
