Molmic has lovingly crafted upholstered furniture in Melbourne for over three decades, obsessing over the smallest of details to ensure perfection. Each sofa takes a journey through a tried and tested manufacturing process, with skilled craftspeople at every step ensuring a stunning result that'll last a lifetime. Follow us through their production process.
Timber
The frame of a sofa is its foundation. Each piece of timber is closely vetted, before being precision cut into individual pieces. The frames are assembled with durability in mind, using traditional joining techniques in existence for over 2000 years. These methods require incredible precision, but ensure that each sofa stands the test of time.
Pre Upholstery
Each frame is then sanded and dressed with hessian and jute webbing. A complex system of springs is then added to the frame, featuring additional support structures to ensures the sofa retains its shape through even the most rigorous use. Foam overlays are added to the frame, ultra treated to help those with allergies or asthma
Fabric
Meanwhile, fabric marked and laid out by hand. Skilled craftsmen carefully check each fabric piece for flaws or defects, before cutting pieces with razor sharp tailor shears. Some material pieces will run through a specialised cutting machine, mapping out patterns across metres of fabric to ensure minimal wastage. Molmic keeps the material for each couch together, ensuring one craftsman cuts the fabric for an entire piece, giving a unique ownership over the finished product.
Sewing
The fabric is then passed onto the sewing team, who all operate in house to ensure strict quality control. Highly trained machinists carefully bring together many fabric components, again relying on traditional techniques of overlocking seams to ensure a stunning finish and exceptional durability
Fabrication + Cushioning
Cushions are individually assembled to not only size specifications, but also to cater uniquely to each customer. Molmic produce a range of seat cushion inners, whether it be a feather blend perfect luxuriously relaxing, or a more structured cushion that is also perfect for those with allergies. These are all backed by extensive warranties.
Assembly
All components now begin to come together. Cushions are stuffed into their carefully sewn outers, while upholsterers marry each sofa’s frame to its specially crafted upholstery. Each Molmic piece represents not only the customer who purchases it, but the highly skilled hands and minds of each craftsperson involved in the process of bringing it to life.
